A San Diego Unified School district bus driver has been suspended following the discovery of his “NOT SEE” license plate that rests below a swastika on the back of his car. A 10 News viewer sent in a photo of Shawn Calpito’s car. Calpito, in addition to promoting racial hatred, works as a school bus driver in San Diego Unified School District. Many parents have expressed concern that Calpito would attempt to negatively influence their children.
According to civil rights attorney Jim McElroy, the DMV does regulate vanity license plates, but this one seemed harmless on its own without the accompanying hate symbol, which allowed it to slip through the cracks. However, the DMV has received a number of complaints about Calpito’s vehicle, and has ordered that the vanity plates be returned because of the awful message.
10 News also reported complaints about Calpito’s car being parked at the transportation facility.
The school district has acted quickly, and Calpito has been placed on leave, pending investigation.
