Fox host Shep Smith recently called for news outlets to be more responsible in covering the burgeoning concerns over Ebola in the United States. It was a reasonable, if not unusual, request coming from a Fox host. So of course, being rational and level-headed made it the target for Rush “Date Rape” Limbaugh.
Limbaugh told his audience on Tuesday that “Shep Smith was crying so much during his reporting from New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina, his mascara was running,” and that “we need to dial it all back here — video, TV, print, loud voices seeking ratings. Who is it that’s always touting their ratings, by the way? Is it Fox?”
The remarks refer to allegations over Smith’s sexuality, in that subtle, “drugged-on-painkillers” way only Rush Limbaugh is capable of achieving. Now, in a normal world, whatever Mr. Smith’s sexuality is, it wouldn’t be a concern. But Limbaugh exists in a reality where date rape is acceptable and 13-year-olds know more about climatology than actual climatologists; I suppose we could be far too generous and call it “stupid,” but it doesn’t even fall in the same particle horizon as “normal.”
Isn’t it scary to think there are people out there who actually listen to him? And those people vote?
Smith has dismissed such accusations as “horseshit.” A fitting dismissal, as that’s what seems to fall out every time Limbaugh opens his mouth.
