America’s favorite guy to boycott advertisers from let out another spew of illogical rhetoric with the comment, “Kids are gonna have guns anyway” to argue against gun control. I admit, I don’t follow Rush and I don’t condone sitting through his constant whining and complaining. This argument had me stumped, though. I couldn’t turn away so I bit. Okay, why are kids “gonna” have guns anway? Here’s a bit of that transcript:
Let’s use the same parallels that the left tells us about sex education and transfer it to guns. Kids are gonna do it anyway, OK? They’re gonna have guns anyway. We can’t stop them! Kids are gonna have sex anyway; we can’t stop ‘em. So we need to make it safe. … Why not teach them to use guns safely?
Now, I know… it sort of just tears itself apart at the beginning, but let’s go with it for a moment. Somewhere out there we have kids buying guns without their parent’s knowing about it. Okay, okay… I know, I know… don’t flip out yet. It’s crazy sure, but I am really trying to figure out the perspective of those who believe this crap.
So let’s do the math on this. From the position of Rush Limbaugh, government money needs to be spent in order to instruct all children, at some to-be-discussed age, how to safely handle firearms in order to reduce firearm deaths. This is equating the number of teen pregnancies to accidental shootings among children by the argument, so let’s check those. The Center for Disease control says that one-third of girls get pregnant before the age of 20, and teenpregnancy.org has a rough count of 750,000 teen pregnancies a year. Okay, so there are going to be A LOT of children being accidentally killed here I am sure, so now we check that.
And according to Momlogic… an entire 500 children are killed from firearms related incidents…. Okay, you all win. You happy now? So Limbaugh’s logic basically is saying that spending more money and possibly causing more firearms accidents is worth the same as preventing 750,000 unplanned pregnancies in teens. Those don’t really seem to compare do they?
So if training all children to use guns isn’t the answer, what is? Armed guards? Bullet-proof backpacks? Kevlar iPads? Gee, I mean what could be causing all this gun culture which is causing all the insane products for paranoid consumers? Maybe the people with stuff to sell you to make you feel safer? Nah… those people couldn’t be causing this. The Free Market is a self-regulating super organism which would never do us any evil.
I don’t believe that policing ever fixes a problem. Policing breaks up quarrels, but it doesn’t stop the source of those fights. When you start training children that they may have to use a weapon in a fight, that becomes something they have access to when they feel they need it. Going down that road questions why we don’t allow 10-year-olds to get driver’s licenses or let 5-year-olds drink and gamble. What should be common sense is lost in all the rhetoric flatulating out of Rush Limbaugh. It just scares me a little bit more that people actually think that this is a good counter-argument to gun control.
