According to a report from the Southern Poverty Law Center, former GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul is scheduled to give a September 11 keynote address — at a conference sponsored by a known anti-Semitic organization.
Making Paul’s appearance even more controversial is the fact that he’s on the same speaker list as the president of the John Birch society, which is a fringe conspiracy theorist group.
The Fatima Center is part of a radical traditionalist Catholic movement and “perhaps the single largest group of hard-core anti-Semites in North America,” according to the SPLC. Paul will be the keynote speaker of the week-long conference sponsored by the organization taking place in Canada this September.
Publications from the group have slammed the Pope for “kowtowing to the Synagogue of Satan,” along with claiming that Jews are conspiring to undermine the Catholic Church on the behalf of Satan. Conspiracy theories about “Zionist billionaires” and the “New World Order” are also prevalent in the Fatima Center’s language.
SPLC also reports that the group’s leader, Father Nicolas Gruner, has been an attendee at Holocaust denial conferences. According to the posted schedule, Gruner will speak at the conference just prior to Paul.
Paul was the subject of criticism in 2012 for newsletters published under his name in the late 80s and 90s, that contained anti-Semitic and racist messages. Paul claimed that he had no idea what the newsletters contained and that he had no control over their content.
