Despite the recent attention on the militarization of police and on how they operate, someone didn’t get the memo. The police in Romeo, MI — whose county, according to the Defense Logistics Agency, has received everything from an armored truck to stacks of assault rifles under the 1033 program — entered a home despite being told they could not. They proceeded to grab residents and handcuff them without explaining why.
As the homeowner and one other woman are cuffed, one cop starts to search the home without a warrant to do so. The person filming, who is not cuffed, tells the officers that there are two young children in the house. He (it sounds like a male) emphasizes that the police pushed a woman out-of-the-way to enter the house without permission.
As the man recording the event follows one officer, you can plainly hear another man — identified as the homeowner — tell the officers to “get out of my house.” When asked why he was there, one officer says
Somebody called 911.
Oh, well, that explains it. (insert eyeroll here) The residents say that nobody in the house called 911. As the owner tells the officer to “get the f**k out of my house,” the cop assaults him. Thrown to the ground, the man is held down by two officers, who wrestle with the man. At one point the man is sprayed with pepper spray surreptitiously. Inside a dwelling. Where a baby is present. You can hear others in the house coughing.
The homeowner and one of the women is the arrested for “resisting.” As everyone moves outside, neighbors can be seen arriving, asking what happened. “Everyone got f**king pepper-sprayed,” the cameraman tells them. One woman seems to be another resident who just arrived to find this scene and wanting to know what happened.
One of the officers tells her that they got a 911 call so they entered the home and someone in the house “grabbed” them. The cameraman is heard saying that wasn’t true and he has it all on tape. The cop then tries to explain that they had only knocked down one woman to get inside, handcuffed her and another woman, assaulted the homeowner and pepper sprayed inside a home to make sure “everybody was okay.”
So entering a house without a warrant, throwing residents onto the ground, releasing pepper spray inside a house where children live and arresting two people is the new way to check if everyone is okay. Got that, folks?
