If there’s one strangely consistent thing about the gods of any culture, it’s that they have an odd tendency to take on the characteristics of whoever’s talking about them. It’s almost as though, throughout history, people developed a habit of putting their own words in God’s mouth, making their own thoughts, prejudices and opinions law by divine fiat.
The pastor of Tennessee’s Brainerd Baptist (mega) Church, Pastor Robby Gallaty, has proven of recent to be a fairly worthy knockoff of his idol Fred Phelps. In an hour-long sermon given this last Sunday, he spent the first half telling the audience how awful homosexuality was, and the second half telling them what must be done about it. The segue between the two was a bit chilling.
“God said that the sins of the people had infected the very land in which they live. So what happens to people who engage in this activity, this sexual immoral activity? Go to Leviticus 20, God gives us the punishment for engaging in these sins… ‘If a man sleeps with a man as with a woman, they have both committed a detestable thing. They must be put to death. And their blood is on their own hands.”
Of course, Gallaty mentioned it as “an example of how seriously God takes the crime of homosexuality,” but the inference is impossible to miss. Particularly when you consider the cognitive dissonance of one inevitable question:
How can you, the faithful, living by the literal law of the Old Testament, not endorse the punishment proscribe by GOD for breaking those laws? If you believe you have to follow that law, why should you not believe that the punishment listed for it is appropriate?
But, hey..that’s the wonderful thing about cherry picking the Bible. You can just follow the parts you want, until it becomes inconvenient to do so. And Gallaty mentions that, in reference to his church’s former endorsement of slavery and racism. He recounts a conversation with a homo, quoting him:
“‘Here’s the problem with the argument that you closed-minded Christians, one day you’re going to come full circle, and you’re going to realize that you’re being judgmental just like racism was 50 years ago.” Adding “And we finally realized that racism was an issue for Christians.”
“And now you guys have repented and come full circle, and you’re going to realize that you’re as foolish as we were with the movement of racism. It’s not the same… A black man can’t change his race, a white man can’t change his race, a homosexual can stop engaging in homosexual acts. See, sexuality is a choice. Gender and race are not.”
Because, as everyone knows, all heterosexuals choose to be heterosexual. Sure, being gay is an option, but the heterosexual lifestyle itself is a choice. And Gallaty agrees, going even further by denying the existence of homosexuals:
“You’re not homosexual, listen to me! You’re not gay! You’re not a lesbian! You’re a child of God…we must learn to separate the act of homosexual sex from the state of being homosexual.”
Very wise. Though we would posit that, using the same logic, it’s equally possible to say to Gallaty:
YOU ARE NOT HETEROSEXUAL! You are NOT straight! Just because you only have sex with women doesn’t mean you’re not really gay! We must learn to separate the act of heterosexual sex from the state of being heterosexual!
Can we get an “AMEN” from the closet?
Watch Pastor Robby Gallaty hate on gays.
