A coalition of far right “Christian” organizations has formed to encourage people of faith to vote in November — but not out of a sense of civic duty. The coalition wants voters to send only right-wing “Christians” to Washington to “return” the nation to its imaginary Christian roots.
To that end, they have organized a webcast scheduled for next Sunday which they are calling iPledge Sunday: The Rise of the Church.
Of course, only good can come of this: the list of leaders of the involved organizations is impressive. All involved are radicals who have made no secret of their desire to make this a nation ruled by the laws of the Bible.
David Barton is an Evangelical minister and founder of WallBuilders. He is also an author who has made the preposterous claim that everyone throughout the nation’s history has misinterpreted the Constitution and that the United States was founded as a “Christian nation.” Barton has been called “one of the foremost Christian revisionist historians” because of his propensity to cherry pick quotes and historical facts to make his case that the nation was founded for and by Christians.
Jim Garlow is another Evangelical minister and an activist in the “pulpit freedom” movement who encourages pastors to ignore IRS rules and endorse the “right” candidates from their pulpits on Sunday.
Kristan Hawkins is the President of Students for Life of America the largest anti-choice organization for young people boasting 700 chapters nationwide. She has written articles that make such wild claims as the Hobby Lobby decision actually gave women more freedom, that Ruth Bader Ginsberg channels Margret Sanger and that Obamacare death panels began killing people off in the summer of 2013.
Rick Scarborough is the founder of Vision America who calls on pastors to become active in politics so that they can restore “Judeo-Christian values to the moral and civic framework in their communities, states, and our nation.”
Rounding out the group are Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, Lila Rose another anti-choice activist known for sneaking into abortion clinics to “expose” them and Mat Staver, a minister and attorney with the Liberty Counsel an anti-gay, anti-choice law firm that provides free legal services to defend “Christian religious liberty, the sanctity of human life, and the traditional family.”
