In their eternal quest to provide you with government small enough to drown in a bathtub, Christian conservative reactionaries have tread a lot of familiar paths. Most of these paths take down the corridors of history to things like the Crusades, or the Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trails, or the Comstock Laws. Darker paths lead to the Holocaust and the Pogroms. However, in their quest to model right-wing heroes that run Iran and Saudi Arabia, the Christian Right may have broken new grounds by suggesting a constitutional amendment to regulate gender identity.
Actually, I owe Iran something that resembles an apology for that remark. In Iran, it’s perfectly legal to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. There’s other baggage that comes along with that, but it’s not illegal, and it surprisingly “progressive,” in the sense that it almost meets the requirements for basic decency.
This, however, is still leagues ahead of Peter Sprigg and former NFL player Craig James. Both Sprigg and James are members of the SPLC-identified hate group, the Family Research Council, and once again confirmed that the SPLC designation is an accurate one while speaking on the “Washington Watch” radio program.
“I think is the ideal policy for government with respect to [transgender rights] is that your sex is your biological sex. My view is, that if your biological sex is unambiguous at birth — if your internal sex organs, your external genitalia, and your chromosomal makeup all are unequivocal in declaring you to be of one sex – then that is your sex for life, and that is your only sexual identity that the government will recognize,” Sprigg said.
That’s nice, Sprigg. Now take your views and go play in traffic.
“Unfortunately, we never codified [gender norms], and I think a lot of states just kind of through erosion, through response to pressure from the transgender movement, have gotten to the point where they, first of all, recognize sex changes in terms of people’s identity documents,” Sprigg added. “But now, they’re going further and actually punishing people who also don’t affirm this myth, this fiction, that people can change their sex.”
And by “punishing,” of course, Sprigg means he got criticized sharply for being a self-centered jackass about it.
If someone asks you not to call them by their birth name, but you insist on calling them by their birth name anyway, you’re an stupid, mean, and contemptible person. If someone tells you not to refer to them as their gender on their birth certificate, and you do it anyway, you’re still a stupid, mean, and contemptible person. You could martyr yourself on 50 different crosses, Sprigg, and it won’t change that simple truth.
This isn’t “political correctness.” This is a failure to master basic socialization, and to understand basic human respect. This should be a ticket back to Kindergarten to try again.
Speaking of Kindergarten failures, Craig James, who was fired from a broadcasting job with Fox Sports Southwest because of anti-LGBT comments he made during his failed U.S. Senate campaign, suggested that conservatives should move to ban gender reassignment through a constitutional amendment as well:
Might Congress — might there be a need for us to have a constitutional movement, an amendment, to identify a person’s sex: It is what you are at birth.
Right-wing: It is what you are drunk on self-righteousness.
