If there’s one thing those nasty, right-wing pundits hate more than the president and his first lady, Michelle Obama, it’s the idea of children — especially poor children — exercising and eating healthy. How else can one explain their vicious campaign to fat-shame the first lady and discredit her Let’s Move campaign?
Let’s Move seems sensible and uncontroversial enough on the surface. Michelle Obama attempts to take a non-political approach towards getting children at all income levels to exercise, drink more water, and eat healthier — and helping communities find the necessary resources.
But of course, these issues ultimately are political: Having access to healthy foods and safe places to play and exercise have become luxuries in our new Republican America, and these right-wing pundits — or at least their wealthy masters — know it.
Americans in low-income rural, urban, and suburban communities often live in “food deserts” with little or no access to affordable, healthy foods. Due to budget cuts and unrealistic testing standards, many schools have had to cut back on recess, plus their lunch and physical education programs. And with more and more parents working longer hours for lower wages, and relying on easy and affordable processed foods to feed their families, even middle-income kids often lack opportunities to eat healthy, and run around and play.
Video mash-up shows how right-wing pundits fat-shame Michelle Obama.
Media Matters for America has created an appalling mash-up of video clips with just a few of the egregious and over-the-top insults right-wing pundits have leveled at our first lady. Conservatives — as well as domestic abusers — have long known that fat-shaming and body-shaming works great for undermining women who pose a threat, and putting them in their place.
Fortunately for us, this probably won’t work when it comes to the beautiful, powerful, self-assured, and totally ripped Michelle Obama. Rush Limbaugh and company probably also hate knowing that our first lady could easily kick their sorry @sses from here to Kingdom Come.
Here are just a few of the most delightful highlights. Or you can scroll down and watch the video.
Rush Limbaugh, right-wing talk radio gas bag:
“[The first lady is] Demanding that everybody basically eat cardboard and tofu. […] It doesn’t look like Michelle Obama follows her own nutritionary, dietary advice.”
Greg Gutfeld, Fox News:
“First Lady Michelle Obama was just seen ordering a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake at a joint in D.C. The meal was over 1,500 calories, roughly the equivalent of eating a live racoon.”
A live racoon? Um, subliminal racist much?
Keith Ablow, “psychiatrist,” and Fox News consultant:
“How well could she be eating? She needs to drop a few.”
Alex Jones, Infowars:
“Every time I look at Michelle or ‘Michael’ Obama…”
Michael Savage, radio “personality”:
“Eat as I say, not as I eat, says Michelle Obama. Perhaps the most hypocritical couple in the history of the presidency. Every time you see her, she’s on vacation slurping an ice cream cone or eating fries.”
