Here we go again.
At about this time last year, Cliven Bundy started making news. The rancher had stolen over $1 million from the United States taxpayer, and was heading for a showdown with the Bureau of Land Management.
While smart thinking on the part of the BLM avoided another Ruby Ridge or Waco, it emboldened these homegrown terrorists, who camped out at the Bundy Ranch. Bundy was a hero in the right-wing media right up until he opened his face and started talking about the Negro, at which point he dropped out of the news cycle.
Well, it’s been about a year since that thief made headlines, and we’re back at it again, with militia groups rushing to Southern Oregon, with a new struggle against the BLM brewing.
KDRV.com reports that the BLM recently discovered a mining operation around Galice Creek; officials with the BLM said they served two notices to the miners, letting them know that they were out of compliance.
The “owners” of the claim, however, took umbrage, and sent out a call for help on the local right-wing crank network. The Oath Keepers of Josephine County responded, and sent out a call for help picked up by Infowars and Before It’s News.
The alert, issued by Chris Langer, a firearms instructor and barbecue restaurant owner from Wisconsin, said:
If you are a true Militia, true III%, Oathkeeper etc. then you are needed. If you can get away from home to help, NOW IS THE TIME. Just like Bundy ranch, the BLM is out of order! SHUT DOWN THE FOREIGN CORPORATION NOW! The miners need you!!
They were seeking at least 50 volunteers with supplies to stay in rough terrain for at least seven days.
The miners contend that Congress set aside the Galice Mining District as a “local governing body for and by miners,” granting them “the right to create and enforce local rules and regulations” as long as they did not conflict with U.S. laws.
The private consortium has created up to 10 million ounces of gold and been in continuous operation since the 1870s. Claims that old hold exclusive rights unless the Department of Interior severs the rights, using the 1955 Surface Resources Act, and the miners are claiming the BLM hasn’t produced evidence of their surface authority.
They’re also accusing the federal agents of destroying documents they are required to maintain as evidence, and want to use the upcoming conflict to shake off federal authority from their mining operation.
In a statement, the miners said, “This case is headed in a direction that presents what is probably a once-in-a-generation prime opportunity to strike at the heart of the very surface management authority of the (Department of the Interior) and (Department of Agriculture) and to restore the ‘as patent’ rights of every mining claim owner in the United States by striking down the actual source of that intrusive authority,”
The BLM has been contesting their rights over underground mineral deposits. The BLM has also spoken with a lawyer who represents the miners. It’s likely the miners will appeal the federal order.
Which is fine, because that’s where disputes of this nature belong: in our court system.
The Oath Keepers, however, want to stir up trouble; that’s the only rational I can think of for wanting to add 50 armed lunatics to the situation. They claim that they’re only ensuring the BLM respects the miner’s Fifth Amendment rights to due process.
Sure they are. Just like they protected Michael Brown and Travyon Martin’s. Or were Brown and Martin not white and rich enough?
