New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced that city schools will be adding another two holidays to their yearly calendar: the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. For students, this means more time off. But according to Fox pundit Todd Starnes and Liar Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, closing schools on Muslim holidays discriminates against Christians because . . . well, they’re not really sure, either. But they’re outraged, by god, and they’re going to do something about it.
Liar Perkins kicked it off, noting that, “But yet when it comes to Christmas and Easter, two very prominent Christian holidays, they’re not on the school calendar, they’re called ‘winter break’ and ‘spring break.'”
“Oh yes,” Starnes agreed. “For the sake of tolerance and diversity, that normally means the Christians are going to be discriminated against or their holidays are going to be minimalized.”
If “renaming” holidays is the best they’ve got as examples of “discrimination” and “persecution,” they’re insulting Christians who routinely face persecution — violent persecution — every day of their life. And frankly, that, more than any of their unadulterated falsehoods, makes me angry. Christians are dying every day to practice their faith and the best Starnes and Perkins have is that their holidays got “renamed” — and that’s not even true.
You’d think that as “Christians” they’d know that Easter Sunday is a thing. Since students get every Sunday off all year long, there’s no reason to acknowledge it as a day off.
And when it comes to Christmas, they’re just lying. Christmas appears on the list of school holidays in New York City, as does Good Friday, and a few Jewish holidays like Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, and Passover.
Liar Perkins lamented that “when 85 percent of the population identifies as Christian but we can’t have a Christmas holiday because it’s religious but yet we can have Muslim holidays, something is not right there in New York City, ‘The Big Apple,’ something is rotten.”
Starnes agreed (at this point, I’m imagining him as a bobblehead doll), saying that “You’re absolutely right Tony” and “How many times have we seen this, where the Islamic faith is being given accommodation and the Christian faith and other religious faiths are being marginalized, not just in the public workspace but also through the Obama administration.”
And there’s Obama. It was only a matter of time. No right-wing conversation on their “victimization” is complete without mentioning the him.
Liar Perkins even managed this impressive bit of verbal gymnastics, attacking president Obama for de Blasio’s decision: “I think the Obama administration has created the environment for policies such as this.”
