Appearing on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher this Friday, scientist and outspoken atheist Richard Dawkins discussed his new memoir chronicling his evolution as a scientist, well as his transformation from a religious youth into an atheist man.
Maher started out by saying many people seem to confuse the term “militant” when the actual issue they have with outspoken atheists is their “clarity.”
Dawkins proceeded to administer his famous clarity, immediately launching into an attack against creationists.
If you believe that the world is only 6,000 years old, as some of these people do, given that the true age of the earth is 4.6 billion years, it’s equivalent to believing the width of North America is eight yards.
The subject then turned to the current Pope, who has been lauded as being somewhat of a progressive. Maher asked Dawkins if he thought it’s possible that Pope Francis could be an atheist.
“I’m sure Obama is an atheist, I’m sure Kennedy was an atheist, but I doubt [Pope Francis] is,” Dawkins replied. He went on to point out that Pope Francis is actually a danger to the Vatican, since his progressive ideas threaten to destabilize the rigid Catholic dogma that’s been entrenched for centuries within the church.
However, Dawkins concluded that Francis still subscribes to the basic doctrine of the church, but just with a “softer tone.”
