The arguments for and against tighter gun laws are as varied as they come. There is one troubling thing that pro-gun advocates like to do which muddies the waters when it comes to discussing gun legislation in this country. In an effort to paint firearms and their owners as benignly as possible, they like to talk-up the “law-abiding gun owner” as being the pinnacle of safety. They tell us that we shouldn’t punish the law-abiding gun owners in this country by making obtaining a gun any more time-consuming or effort inducing as it currently is because you can trust them! They’re the good guys.
Maybe that’s true, but when you read the news stories like the one out of Lancaster, OH this week, you can’t deny that guns are taken far, far too much for granted in this country. Over the weekend in Lancaster a gun range owner by the name of Terry J. Dunlap Sr. accidentally shot one of his students when a gun discharged and the bullet ricocheted in the student’s right arm. Michael Piemonte, the student shot said his wife was sitting right next to him and she could have been hit herself.
We’re not going to over-politicize an accidental shooting. However, it’s impossible not to note that this accident happened in a gun range owned by man who teaches gun safety for a living. If that’s the case, if even in the most preferable conditions for safety these kinds of accidents can happen, why are we at all surprised when small children find improperly stored weapons and kill someone or themselves? If guns can be this accidentally dangerous in the best of conditions, isn’t it just the smart thing to do to make sure that terrorists, sexual-offenders and violent criminals can’t easily walk into a store and buy one themselves, to use in an intentionally deadly way?
Now for the lighter side of derps and their guns, we present this video:
