Listening to the spin from Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul — both of whom voted last week to keep the government shut down and ostensibly for a default on our national debts — you’d think that the sixteen day death of Federal government only bolstered their party’s cause. But the two Republican Senators — who are also both unmistakably running for president in 2016 — are living under the influence of a powerful drug: denial.
As the video below, from our friends at VOAVideo discusses, there are many in the GOP who see the carnage of the last two weeks and know full-well the damage done to their party’s “brand” over the shutdown is not anything to be ignored. In the clip, Vin Webber, a former Republican Congressman makes it very clear in plain language that the Tea Party’s ideological brinksmanship is furthering the divide in the party.
The fight for the Republican party’s messaging is only going to heat up as we approach 2014 and then 2016’s presidential election. Clearly there are at least two major divisions in the party between “old guard” Republicans and those who align themselves with the hard-right fringe of the Tea Party. Both sides are now hurling insults in the press at each other, but perhaps the best and most telling quote in the clip though comes from Kentucky Republican Congressman Harold Rogers with just nine simple words, “It’s time to restore some sanity to this place.”
The question is whose definition of “sanity” will the GOP be choose?
