While I’m not much for “slippery slope” arguments (or logical fallacies in general), the newest anti-choice move by Republican lawmakers in Texas unfortunately gives credence to the theory. Just days after Gov. Rick Perry signed a sweeping bill into law which bans abortions after 20 weeks and will close all but six of the women’s health clinics which perform the procedures in Texas, a trio of GOP legislators have upped the ante…a lot.
The Texas legislature is currently operating in a special session specifically designed to quickly push abortion legislation through before a July 31st deadline and three Republican Reps., Phil King, Dan Flynn, and Geanie Morrison, are grabbing their chance to score points in the state’s war one women’s reproductive rights. The lawmakers filed bill HB59 on Thursday, which would outlaw abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected–usually just about six weeks into a pregnancy.
Although the likelihood of HB59 actually becoming law is almost nil due to its radical nature, North Dakota passed a similar ban earlier this year which is currently being challenged in court for violating the Supreme Court’s decision in the landmark pro-choice case, Roe vs. Wade.
