A Republican Senate candidate from Kentucky has claimed that allowing homosexuals to marry will lead to parents marry their own children to avoid paying tax.
Matt Bevin, a businessman from Louisville, is planning to challenge the Republican Senate Minority Leader in the state primary in November. He told a Christian radio program that he believes marriage should be defined as a union between a man and a woman. However, he then went on to claim that redefining marriage would encourage people to abuse the system for financial gain:
“If it’s all right to have same-sex marriages, why not define a marriage – because at the end of the day, a lot of this ends up being taxes and who can visit who in the hospital, and there’s other repercussions and things that come with this -so a person may want to define themselves as being married to one of their children so that they could then in fact pass on certain things to that child financially and otherwise.”
A spokesperson for Mr. Bevin said that the senate candidate was not comparing same-sex marriage to incest, but expressing his concern at the abuses of marriage that could occur if it is redefined.
Same-sex marriage is legal in 17 US states and the District of Columbia. As far as a cursory look can tell, there have been no instances of parents marrying their own children. Claims that recognising the legal rights of homosexuals will lead to social breakdown are nothing new in the Republican Party. In a 2003 interview 2012 Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum told the AP news agency:
“If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”
Once again, a look through recent history shows that: bigamy is still illegal; incest is punishable by a lengthy prison term; and adultery can also violate prenuptial agreements. Curiously enough, the only group practising bigamy on a large scale in recent history are Christian Mormons.
