Watch: Brave Fast Food Worker Confronts Republican Against Living Wages (Video)

During a public forum this Tuesday, Rep. Dennis Ross (R-FL) blew off a questioner who asked the GOP Congressman to come try working for minimum wage to see if he could handle it.

Shaneeka Rainer has been working at Arby’s for a decade and has only received one raise — and that was when Congress increased the minimum wage in 2007. When Rainer confronted Ross at the forum, the Congressman’s dismissive attitude was palpable.

“It’s not right,” Ross said. “If we are going to make it a living wage, who’s going to pay for it?”

An audience member then chimed in, saying that he’d gladly pay more for a hamburger if it meant workers were given the ability to live better.

“I felt like he blew off my question,” Rainer told ThinkProgress after the town hall. “He doesn’t understand what it’s like.”

I think the Florida Represenitive is about as full of crapola as Rick Scott notices he veers way way off the subject at the end to keep from having to fully explain his position. That is called trying to veer the subject off in a whole different direction, because you know your point is invalad… Glad the audience did not fall for it and called him out!

I’m sorry but if you guys knew anything about the economy you would know that increasing the minimum wage DECREASES the amount employed. Therefore people lose jobs and unemployment goes up. Min. Wage is in opposition to equilibrium in the first place and creates job shortages. If you work hard enough and explore all areas of employment (not just what you want to explore) you can survive and thrive in this beautiful country. God Bless America.

Hooper, explain for us how liberalism ‘does this’ for people. Please. I can’t wait to hear it.
You have to be the biggest jackass in ten counties.

Does this moron not realize that he is government? His paycheck is government? Surely we don’t need any more people like him in our government!

  • Jessica Montgomery

Oh my god. I actually know the Arby’s he is speaking of and that congressman is in my district. Fuck him. He’s gonna be gone come election day.

  • Hooper

She’s still working at Arby’s after ten years? That’s what liberalism does to people.

      Hooper the douchebag as usual.

    • LynB

Doesn’t this GOP ignoramus know that when you put more money in the pockets of the ‘working poor’ they spend it!! They spend it at your business and my business. What an @ss

That’s the Hooper troll I know. Disparage the lazy unemployed and then the ones who work at the only job available to them.

People don’t work minimum wage jobs because they want to. They work minimum wage jobs because they have no other options. At least she is working and not sitting on her butt selling drugs and collecting food stamps while driving an Escalade. Give credit where credit is due.

    • Comicus

Funny. I thought liberals were the elitists and here Hooper is the one looking down with contempt upon a hard working American.

If she wants to work at Arby’s for the rest of her life, go ahead. But don’t expect someone else to pay for her bad choices. she is free to participate in the free market as her abilities will allow, and where she can improve her ability to participate she should take advantage of that. Slinging roast beef was never meant to be a career. The business model didn’t call for that nor do the demands of the job call for that.

Still, go ahead and work at Arby’s forever. I don’t look down on anyone willing to work. Just don’t expect someone to pay you more than the job is worth through the force of government.

But that’s what so pernicious about liberalism. It says to these people that they have no responsibility to improve their abilities to participate in the economy, at the same time leaving them begging for crumbs that the government gives them at the whim of some politician who blames Arby’s, corporations, republicans, and a whole host of perceived enemies.

How about, instead of skewing the marketplace with minimum wage requirements, we encourage her to get an AA degree or go to a trade school (at least) where she can rid herself of Arby’s forever. Let’s dramatically reduce what college costs – by getting rid of the tons and tons of liberal programs that only burden the mission of a college. Nope, liberals coddle her and make her believe that someone else is responsible for her working at Arby’s for 10 years. That’s dehumanizing. That’s destructive to her self worth. That’s liberalism.
