Never let it be said that a Republican has a sense of humor or a discerning eye which can distinguish between a satirical story on a website dedicated to satire and a true news story from a reliable news source.
Colorado state Senator Vicki Marble (R) saw a National Report story detailing how at least one of the new pot shops in Denver is accepting Electronic Benefit Transfer cards (EBT cards) to purchase pot. Shocked to learn this, she introduced a bill in the state Senate to ban the practice. One has to wonder how she reacted to the report on the site that President Obama was using his own funds to keep the National Islamic Museum open during the government shut down in October.
Miss Vicki is not the sharpest pencil in the box as she demonstrated last summer when she addressed the state’s Economic Opportunity Poverty Reduction Task Force, telling them that black Americans find themselves disproportionately poverty-stricken because they eat too much fried chicken — she forgot to include all that watermelon and its contribution to the higher incidence of diabetes in the black community.
She also overlooks the fact that this bill will no more stop those who receive assistance from using money from their grant to purchase pot than an existing law stops them from gambling or buying liquor with those funds by disallowing ATM withdrawals at a gaming establishment or a liquor store.
Food stamps cannot be used to purchase pot and any cash assistance that a recipient may receive can be withdrawn at another location and then used to gamble or purchase pot, liquor or anything else.
It is hard to comprehend anyone, even someone who has never heard of the National Report, could take seriously a story entitled, “Colorado Pot Shop Accepting Food Stamps – Taxpayer Funded Marijuana for Welfare Recipients,” particularly when the same site lists other articles with titles such as “Colorado Pot Shop Attempts To Disarm Citizens With ‘Weed for Guns’ Buyback Program,” “How Obama’s EPA Is Taking Away Your 2nd Amendment,” and “U.S. Caves to Iran In Nuclear Deal. Sharia Law Now to be Taught in U.S. Universities. Qurans to be Placed in Motel Rooms.”
In fairness, Miss Vicki was neither alone nor the first to be duped by the satirical article, it was picked up by a conservative “news” site which linked it to its Twitter account and bought into by the Douglas County Republican Committee which directed her to it. The day after she read it she introduced SB 14-037 to put an end to an abuse that was not happening in the first place.
