The government may be in a near total shutdown, but the ongoing civil war within the Republican Party is still in full swing, and shows no sign of stopping.
Republican congressman Peter King of New York launched a blistering attack on the Tea Party last night as he accused Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) of leading an extremist faction within the GOP, causing the government to shutdown via their intractable opposition to the Affordable Healthcare Act known as Obamacare.
King, who is a vocal opponent of Obamacare and favors its repeal, said that he would not vote for any new resolution that delayed or defunded Obamacare, believing that the near-total closing down of federal services was not a price worth paying.
Congressman King then focused his attention on the Tea Party and Senator Cruz:
“We have too many people in our party, it’s a minority, who are lead by Ted Cruz, and they are tying up the entire Republican Party. The overwhelming majority of House members would vote to keep the government open. I’m tired of having Ted Cruz call the shots for House Republicans.”
King said that he supported negotiating with the Democrats over Obamacare and its provisions. “[B]ut because of Ted Cruz it was all or nothing,” he said. “It was defund Obamacare or shutdown the government and we were locked into that.”
He also appealed to the moderate and responsible Republican House members to come together to show that they can be “a governing party” and not one that responds to “small factions.”
