This week, Sheldon Adelson, a mega donor to the GOP cause who donated a total of $92 million to right wing political groups during the last election cycle, has proposed his solution to the problem of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. It’s simple, he says: nuke ’em!
Speaking at a panel discussion at Yeshiva University on the topic, “Will Jews Exist? Iran, Assimilation and the Threat to Israel and Jewish Survival,” Adelson disparaged the current talks going on in the international community with Iran on the subject of their nuclear program. Adelson sneered, “What are we gonna negotiate about?”
“What I would say is, you see that desert out there? I wanna show you something, and so there’s an atomic weapon, goes over a ballistic missile, in the middle of the desert,” he said. Adelson claimed that the fallout from such an attack would be minimal, only affecting “maybe a couple of rattlesnakes and scorpions or whatever.”
An app known as the NukeMap tells a very different story, the fallout from a nuclear blast in the most remote parts of the Iranian desert would come within 60 miles of some Iranian city in a best-case scenario.
Of course to Mr. Adelson, these are simply Muslims and a few less of them would be of no consequence in his mind.
His reasoning of course is that once you have shown them that the use of a nuke is not off the table, “Then you say, ‘See? The next one is in the middle of Tehran.'” This is his idea of how diplomacy works.
What makes this man’s solutions to problems so frightening is the fact that he pumps so much cash into the political process. If nothing else, this is a perfect illustration as to why we have to get the money out of the process, before someone like Adelson whispers in some president’s ear and launches a nuclear holocaust that ends civilization once and for all.
