Rafael Cruz, father of Teapublican Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), decided to spout racist rhetoric recently by saying that the “average black” person does not understand why the minimum wage is bad. According to The Raw Story, he claimed that minimum wage laws hurt black people far more than white people, and that blacks should definitely fight to repeal the minimum wage if they want equality.
During a speech to the Western Williamson County Republican Club, the elder Cruz said:
“Jason Riley said in an interview, ‘Did you know before we had minimum wage laws, Black unemployment and white unemployment were the same? If we increase the minimum wage, Black unemployment will skyrocket.’ See, he understands it, but the average Black does not.”
Cruz also pointed out that it was Republicans who passed the Civil Rights Act, and that the Ku Klux Klan used to be made up entirely of Democrats. In fact, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed with votes from both parties, and a Democratic president signed it into law. Furthermore, Democrats in northern states were more likely to vote for the act than Republicans in those same states. It was the opposite in the South, which was a conservative, Democratic stronghold.
A paradigm shift was underway at that time, also, with Southern Conservatives heading towards the Republican Party, and more liberals (including scientists) heading towards the Democratic Party. The two parties from the ’50s and ’60s aren’t the parties we have today.
But we really can’t expect Rafael Cruz to understand that, or this issue that he talks about like he’s the supreme expert. This is the man who called black and Hispanic voters “deceived” and “uninformed” under the guise of minority outreach for the GOP back in 2013.
Yes, calling people uninformed and deceived is a great way to make them feel like you care. The Huffington Post ran his comments back then, and he said that all blacks and Hispanics should be Republican, because they share Republican values, so the Republicans obviously have their best interests at heart.
Maybe after 2018, Rafael Cruz and his horrible, racist, theocratic, obstructionist son will disappear from the political landscape. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with both for another four years. Watch his ridiculous comments here:
