Five African-American churches have been set ablaze in the St. Louis area just within the past 10 days, and unlike the recent cluster of weather-related fires which plagued the area during the summer, these give every indication of being the work of arsonists.
That’s pretty big news. Yet, for some reason, the top stories currently trending are the deaths of actors from Star Trek and Petticoat Junction, Steve Weatherford put a Giants jersey on the Rocky statue, and Bindi Irwin brought a snake to her Dancing with the Stars rehearsal. The Media is virtually ignoring this important news story, which is strange in light of the highly comprehensive coverage they affording the burning of a CVS during riots in Baltimore earlier this year.
St. Louis Fire Department captain Garon Mosby reported his convictions to Fox 2 Saint Louis.
“It is arson; these are being intentionally set. This is not spontaneous combustion, so they are not occurring on their own.”
The department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is currently investigating the arsons, which all occurred in predominately black neighborhoods in North St. Louis, near Ferguson. Racial Tensions have escalated since the shooting death of Michael Brown in August 2014. Other churches have been torched this year in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee. Apparently, incinerating places of worship is a popular stratagem for hate groups, according to commentator David A Love.
“Strike at the Black church, and you strike at the heart of Black American life.”
Between 1995 and 2001, there were 945 acts of suspected arson against houses of prayer by white supremacists and their buddies; most of the targets were black churches. This resulted in the creation of the National Church Arson Task Force by Bill Clinton in 1996. It was disbanded in 2000 when the president left office.
It’s very possible the increased wave in church arsons is a backlash by white supremacists against the #BlackLivesMatter movement, which has been labeled by Bill O’Reilly as its own hate group, maintaining these activists encourage violence against police officers. Maybe these racist conservatives should quit whining about their Second Amendment right and take a hard look at the First Amendment.
