A group of xenophobes, holding misspelled signs and waving American flags, prevented three buses from carrying undocumented immigrants to a border patrol processing facility in Murrieta, California on Tuesday. The protestors refused to unblock the road, chanting “USA,” “take them away from here,” and “America, stand your ground.”
Approximately 140 undocumented immigrants, including migrant families with mothers and small children, were en route for processing and “supervised release” when the Black Shirts jumped the caravan, according to the LA Times.
The group, called We the People Rising, chanted “Nobody wants you, you’re not welcome. Go home.” One of the protestors shouted “Turn around and go back,” and “Vamanos. You’re in contempt of Congress . . . criminals. Go home. We have no money for you.” Another protestor approached a tanned police officer attempting hold the crowd back, asking if he could “take the day off” because “these are your kids too.”
According to ThinkProgress, there was a small group of counter-protestors present that were also harassed by the sign-bearing, flag-waving Black Shirts:
A small group of immigrant counter-protesters was also present and verbally threatened at the demonstration, including Lupillo Rivera, the brother of the late Mexican singer Jenni Rivera. He told the Los Angeles Times that a protester had shouted that “he was an illegal immigrant and should go home.” Rivera, a U.S. citizen, “went home and returned with several of his friends and bandmates to confront the protesters.” Though the police were largely able to separate the two groups of protesters, both groups stayed into the evening.
After the incident, Murrieta’s Mayor, Alan Long, told FOX that “when you start asking about the health screenings that they claim they get, there’s a lot of gaps. They could not answer a lot of questions that we had to give us certainty that the people on those buses were healthy.”
It’s funny how they only care about public health when we’re talking about brown people immigrating into the country. The minute you implement policies to improve public health for everyone already in the country, they lose their ever-loving minds. Many anti-immigration groups in the past have raised Long’s “concerns” for public health, even though migrants detained at the border are medically screened of rashes, vomiting, and other communicable diseases during the processing stage.
Mayor Long warned residents on Monday that the city’s border patrol processing facility would be receiving the immigrants from Texas every 72 hours. It’s part of a federal program to deal with the mass of unaccompanied children having fled developing world violence and grinding poverty in Latin American to developed world violence and grinding poverty here in the United States. According to ThinkProgress:
Long explained that the city had been “successful” in turning away Border Patrol efforts twice before. He said, “Murrieta continues to object to this transfer of illegal immigrants from local Border Patrol offices. … What you the public can do … contact your Congress representative and the White House. Residents can help by spreading facts and not rumors. … Right now, the best thing you can do is to contact the federal officials that makes these decisions and ask for it to be changed.”
