NYPD officers are outraged–OUTRAGED–at the chokehold death of a man accused of selling untaxed cigarettes. Eric Garner, an asthmatic father of six, was shown on video begging officers for his life as he struggled for air. Despite that Garner was struggling to breathe, officers on the scene claimed, “No, he’s OK, he’s OK.”
The source of officers’ outrage is not that fellow officers could ignore a man’s pleas, or murder him over suspicion of a nonviolent crime, or that a chokehold was applied even though it is against department policy. Police are angry that people are upset about it.
Posters on Thee Rant and PoliceOne.com, a police “rant” site and a law enforcement news outlet, said that, among other things, Garner brought his death upon himself. Posters shamed the victim of this horrid police brutality, claiming that his health was a factor and that he resisted arrest–despite video evidence to the contrary.
Officers and supporters posted disgusting remarks about this man, who they have tried and convicted in the comment sections of those web sites, ignoring any sense of justice that should be an inherent part of their jobs.
Hometownlife compiled some of the more disgusting remarks. One person wrote on PoliceOne:
“Mayor you killed our effectiveness on the street, when you killed Stop and Frisk. Because of a few bleeding heart liberals and a few ethnic groups who believe they are the only ones being stopped. You shut down the whole system. Because now all those baggy ass pants you see walking around are probably locked and loaded.”
Another claimed the chokehold was not a chokehold:
“If you can talk you can breathe! A strong and deadly choke hold would not allow a person to talk.”
Another blamed Garner’s death on the father and husband’s alleged love of hamburgers:
“Again if Mr walking heart attack had simply put his hamburger shovels behind his back, he wouldn’t have had a heartbattackmfor (sic) over exerting himself.”
On Thee Rant, someone claimed,
“He probably never worked a legit job. The city will pay off the family and they will be in (racial epithet) heaven for the rest of their lives!”
One commenter claimed that Garner’s name was too “white.”
“ERIC GARNER? Yeah! Sure you are! A Nordic/Germanic given name and Anglo-Saxon surname! How dare you steal our names! You are hereby posthumously renamed MOBUTU TAKANUKU!”
Two EMTs and two paramedics have been suspended without pay and two police officers who were on the scene have lost their guns and badges until an internal affairs investigation is complete.
