Jefferson County, Missouri police are searching for answers regarding a racist, threat laden letter, delivered to the home of an interracial family last Thursday, the day after Christmas. The letter, signed “The Sons Of Liberty,” was hand delivered by an unseen individual Thursday afternoon. The couple answered a knock on the door sometime near 2 p.m., finding only the letter and it’s menacing warning left behind.
Threatening what the writers called, “...rag-heads, mixed breeder and their offspring,” the letter swore repeatedly that the group would attack what they called their ‘enemies,’ and lead armed revolts “against threats foreign and domestic.”
Neither the couple who received it, nor police have any immediate leads as to the source of the letter.
Though there is a Sons of Liberty organization who describe themselves as an “unregulated” militia and do promote highly nationalist rhetoric regarding armed “responses to America’s enemies,” the group’s charters insist on non-discriminatory policies. The Missouri chapter of the group declined to comment on the record when contacted, but did post this to their Facebook wall following our request for comment:
[box type=”shadow”]I have been made aware of the following incident in the respective article below. I would like to take this time to offer my personal as well as the organization I am a part of condolences to the family who received this letter. We do not condone or approve of bigotry on any level or condone violence on any level. Unfortunately there are others outside of our group who use the name Sons of Liberty to hide behind cowardice acts like this.[/box]
Throughout the various social media pages and Sons of Liberty websites, there are mentions of internal, factional difficulties sprouting from non-members and former members using the group’s title and seal.
Regardless however of the goings-on in this “constitutionalist militia,” the community in Crystal City, as well as police are expressing disgust with the threat, with Police Chief Jeff McCreary quoted by KMOV as saying “It’s not welcome here. It’s just not.”
