In India, the practice is known as “Sati” — the term comes from the goddess of the same name (also known as Dakshayani). Sati was the Hindu goddess of felicity and longevity, and she was married to the God of Gods, Shiva.
One day, Sati’s father threw a party, and didn’t invite Shiva. Sati came to realize that her father hated Shiva because he had wed his daughter. Consumed by rage, and realizing that she was the source of her husband’s dishonor, Sati used her Yogic powers to set herself on fire to avenge her husband’s honor.
For the last 15 years, America has been driven slowly insane. Liars like Fox, fearmongers like Alex Jones, paranoid lunatics like Glenn Beck, and delusional anarchists like the Tea Party; small wonder we’ve got motorcycle gangs and prison doctors assaulting people on the streets, and infanticidal mothers committing suicide by cop in front of the capitol. It might be easy the to dismiss this as another instance of pure insanity; another loose nut who finally broke free.
But don’t do it.
About 4:24 P.M.on October 4th, a man walked onto the National Mall in Washington D.C. According to onlookers, the man poured the contents of a bright red gas can over himself. Moments later, a pillar of yellow flame enveloped him.
The man was quickly surrounded by four or five passing joggers, who beat the flaming man with their shirts attempting to put him out. they met with limited success; for the most part, all they could do was wait for the gasoline to burn itself out. According to witness Nicole Didyk, the man whispered “thank you” when the flames had been (mostly) extinguished.
It was initially reported that the man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and burns to over 80% of his body, though witnesses said the man wasn’t moving when help arrived. Another witness reports that there was an accomplice, a second person who was there filming the entire incident. But a second person says a tripod was setup nearby, but no one was filming.
However, a number of people were filming. A large group who, as one witness named Cheryl said:
“I saw several people filming on their phones. All I remember thinking is ‘no one calling 911, because they were all filming.'”
Already online, you’re seeing dismissive comments about this particular instance of sati. As though, gee…what are the ODDS that two crazy people would do something crazy in downtown DC 24 hours apart? Wow…that’s just crazy ironic, right?
The police say there was no political motive known.
Police had all evidence of the event cleaned up by 5 P.M.
People have said:
“Nut Job.why did his friend not set himself up also.gee i feel no pain who really cares another moran burned to hell..have not a clue why or do i give a damm… sick of all the kooks out their ,,,,, what was his stupid issues sure no one will miss him.”
“Another black man who can’t cope with living in America.”
“Of course, this has to be reported, but in a way, I wish the press would just ignore stuff like this, or report it in a way that was not so sensational.”
“I’m not sure if this self immolation has anything to do with the shutdown. Could just be a mental patient who just completely lost it.”
The man himself said nothing before the fact. But according to one witness, he said everything he needed to say without saying a word.
Just before lighting himself on fire, the man turned toward the capitol building…
