In an interview with the New York Times published on Saturday President Obama slammed the GOP/Tea Party lie that the planet-killing and dangerous Keystone XL pipeline would create many jobs.
The President told the Times, “Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator. There is no evidence that that’s true. The most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline, which might take a year or two, and then after that we’re talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 jobs in an economy of 150 million working people.”
GOP/Tea Partiers, Polluters, and those with a vested interest in the pipeline have claimed that building the Keystone XL would be a major job creator. If fact the conservative U.S. Chamber of Commerce even bought a full page ad in the New York Times last year, telling President Obama not to say “no” to “20,000 jobs.” The “20,000 jobs” figure comes from TransCanada’s estimates, which we are certain are totally accurate and have nothing to do with the fact that they’re the ones profiting from it…yeah right. Last year, however, Cornell University revealed a study which showed that the pipeline would create far fewer jobs than TransCanada’s figure. The study showed that very few jobs would be locally sourced. And if that isn’t bad enough, over half of the steel used for the pipeline would be manufactured overseas. Murika!
Interesting to note: According to PoliticusUSA, “It turned out that in 2010 Boehner invested in 7 Canadian tar sand companies according to his 2010 financial disclosure and stood to profit from the pipeline’s construction. Boehner’s investments and lies lead to an appeal to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch an investigation into share manipulation and personally profiting from his high-ranking position in the House.”
We hope this is the beginning of the end for the Keystone XL pipeline.
