A 25 year old Florida woman was shot in the head by a friend’s .22 caliber pistol as she and her husband admired his gun collection. The incident occurred in Brooksville, about 75 miles west of Orlando.
Katherine Lynn Hoover, who was five months pregnant, was looking at a gun collection belonging to William DeHayes when DeHayes’ revolver discharged. Hoover was struck in the head. She was taken to a local hospital, then airlifted to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Doctors there removed the baby, but he did not survive. Hoover died early on Sunday.
Don DeHayes, father of the man who owns the guns, told reporters:
We feel terrible about the whole thing. For the other family, for my son and his family, we just feel bad. You can’t change things.
At the present time, police are calling the shooting accidental. They have not yet said whether DeHayes will be charged with negligence. No details are available regarding what caused the gun to fire, or whether DeHayes, Hoover, or her husband knew the gun was loaded.
