What did you dress up as this Halloween? I dressed as Guy Fawkes to take my son trick or treating, personally. I saw a colorful array of princesses, zombies, both of the Mario Brothers, About half the ninja cast of Mortal Kombat, and much more! You know what I didn’t see? Some @$$hole racist ruining the fun with gear he bought at Klanny’s KKKostume shop.
Some have sparked outrage with some fairly offensive costumes–like the idiots who dressed up as a dead Trayvon Martin and a very much free George Zimmerman, complete with blackface. Since that particular photo, along with others, went public debate has arisen over whether blackface is acceptable in our society.
A YouGov survey tackled that debate head-on, conducting a survey that focused on how various groups viewed the use of blackface, which has been traditionally worn by white performers to emphasize racial stereotypes in the past.
The use of blackface is unsurprisingly split among races:
A surprising number of Americans, 43%, find the use of blackface to be acceptable in a costume. Only 37% find it unacceptable, and 20% aren’t sure. Of course, this prevalence of acceptance is largely found among white people, with nearly 70% of African-Americans opposed to the idiotic idea of perpetuating a racial stereotype for a laugh.
Of course, this split is seen across party lines, as well.
Over 50% of Democrats find the racist portrayal of a black person to be unacceptable, while 59% of Republicans are fine with it–by a 2:1 margin!
Republicans repeatedly bleat to the media that they are not racist, but this begs the question: what, exactly, do they consider racist? The North Carolina GOP chair recently stepped down after making some very offensive remarks in a Daily Show interview. A Minnesota GOP group recently posted a meme depicting a slave auction. Republicans grin and make outlandish claims that racially biased programs actually help African-Americans. Some even admit that they would vote for slavery, if that’s what the people wanted *wink*. At least one has called President Obama a tar baby. Some of them are so not racist that they spew vile racial epithets and calls for President Obama’s assassination. Some of these non-racists even stand in front of a black man’s house, waving a Confederate flag, and demanding that he git outta town! Others say we really need a white President. The party that passes laws aimed at disenfranchising black voters, requiring federal legislation to ensure some modicum of fairness, is anything but racist!
Their sentiments exist only because racism is over in America.
