According to a piece in Politico today, top GOP leaders are privately warning members to keep quiet when it comes to brazen calls for impeachment against President Obama. Some Republicans are worried that the usual fringe lunatics like Michelle Bachmann and Ted Cruz will destroy GOP credibility in their hopes to take advantage of the latest “scandals.”
“We have to be persistent but patient,” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told Politico. “I think where there’s smoke, there’s fire. If we present ourselves to the American people as intelligent, we’re going to be in a great place as far as showing that this administration is not transparent, is obsessed with power and hates dissent. But you don’t call for impeachment until you have evidence.”
In the midst of all the hoopla, people tend to forget that that there is no evidence to link any of the specific controversies directly to President Barack Obama. It’s hard to say what the various congressional probes will reveal, but until they can actually implicate Obama in a scandal, the best thing Republicans can do is keep the fringe nutbag wing of their party in check.
