New Mexico State Police have opened an investigation after seeing a dramatic dashcam video which displays a State Trooper opening fire on a minivan full of children following an altercation with the driver and her son. The van’s driver, Rihanna Ferrell, and her 14 year-old son are now facing charges.
The video shows what seems like a routine traffic stop, except when the officer goes back to his car, presumably to run Ferrell’s license, she inexplicably drives away. After being pulled over (and stopping voluntarily) again, the officer opens the door and the altercation begins. Children are screaming in the van, while a scuffle begins between the officer and Ferrell. Footage shows Ferrell’s 14 year-old son attempt to break up the fight before getting back into the van.
At this point, the officer attempts to smash in the passenger-side window. More officers arrive before the woman flees the scene and the officers open fire on the van filled with terrified, screaming children.
The van is pursued through wrong-way traffic and busy streets before Ferrell relents and pulls over in front of a hotel. Video shows her and her son in cuffs, although it is unknown at this time what the specific charges against them are.
It’s not clear why the woman antagonized the officer by driving away in the first place. Regardless, police officers put several innocent children’s lives in danger in what seems like an extreme overreaction and use of force considering the circumstances.
