Dr. Lawrence Krauss is one of the world’s most brilliant minds. According to physics.about.com Dr. Krauss’ education includes:
1977 – Undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics at Ottawa’s Carleton University, having earned first class honours.
1982 – Physics Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology
1982 to 1985 – Member of the Harvard Society of Fellows
1985 to 1993 – Assistant and then associate professorship at Yale
1993 to 2005 – He went on to serve as the Ambrose Swasey Professor of Physics, Professor of Astronomy, and Chairman of the department of Physics at Case Western Reserve University
2008 to present (2011, at least) – Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and Physics Department, and Inaugural Director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University
Krauss has authored:
The Fifth Essence (1991)
Fear of Physics (1994)
The Physics of Star Trek (1995)
Beyond Star Trek (1997)
Hiding in the Mirror (2005)
Quantum Man: Richard Feynman’s Life in Science (2010)
A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather Than Nothing (Jan. 2012)
He is also the author of over 300 scientific papers and winner of numerous awards and honors for his work.
So we can safely say Dr. Krauss is a badass. He’s funny and irreverent and his contributions to the public understanding of science have moved humanity forward immeasurably. So when Dr. Krauss speaks, we should listen.
The regressive anti-science Tea Party has been making inroads into our school system which is causing horrible damage to education as a whole. Efforts to rewrite history, erasing the terror and result of right wing ideology in theory and practice notwithstanding – nothing has caused more damage than the TEApublican’s attacks on science education. Anything that contradicts their narrow, insane and hyper-religious world-view is something that is to be feared and destroyed. Basically that includes reality as whole. Efforts to ban the teaching of evolution and inject religious creationism, and its bastard cousin “Intelligent Design” into our school systems have erupted all over the country.
Krauss believes, (and we agree) that to teach creationism to children is a form of child abuse.
“Sure, it is mild child abuse, but it is. “We need to encourage our children to question freely and try to think for themselves. Anything we do that counters that is unfair to them,” Krauss said.
Dr. Krauss went on,
If you’re introducing it as reality, if you’re telling your kids the world is 6,000 years old, and they shouldn’t believe scientists because there is no way humans are related to other animals, and don’t believe any of that stuff you learned in school, or take you kids of out of school because they are learning something, then it is like the Taliban at some level, which is an extreme form of child abuse. The Taliban doesn’t want girls to be educated or people to be educated because if they do they’ll understand the myths they are learning are crap.
This isn’t just a liberal view, or a liberal opinion. It’s science, baby! You don’t have to believe it, you can TEST IT! Check out the rest of the interview here:
