A Police Chief’s daughter is among three Bucks County Pennsylvania residents who have turned themselves in to police in connection with a recent savage, homophobic assault.
Advocate.com reports that Kathryn Knott, the 24 year-old daughter of Chalfont Borough Police Chief Karl Knott, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and criminal conspiracy.
Knott’s attorneys claim that their client acted in self defense when she and a group of nearly 15 people put the same-sex couple in the hospital on September 11th. It was
apparently a mutual dispute, and not in any way (insert eyeroll) rampant LGBT bashing, that lead to the attack. During a brief look at Knott’s Twitter account, one will find evidence of anti-gay bigotry and hatred of minorities. It is also hard for one to overlook her love for hard liquor. Just in case any of this wonderful information has been removed, LGBT activist Scott Wooledge has curated a fine collection of Knott’s most damning tweets on Storify.
The evidence that the couple were attacked for being gay is growing. The biggest problem now is that Pennsylvania does not consider assault on the LGBT community a hate crime. Legislation was passed in 2002 that did give LGBT people protected status, but the Pennsylvania Supreme Court struck it down in 2008 on a technicality. Civil rights groups are petitioning lawmakers to pass a bill that would protect members of the LGBT community from hate crimes, but it is currently stalled. Philly Councilman Jim Kenney is urging U.S. Attorney Zane Memeger to consider all charges in the Knott case to be brought up under the Mathew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate crimes act. Councilman Kenney also left a statement for anyone else who might consider acting as Knott and her group of friends.
“If you are a homophobe or a racist and you live in the suburbs or anywhere else, we don’t want you in our city,” he said. “We don’t want you coming to our restaurants, walking our streets. When two men who happen to love each other and live with each other can’t go out for a pizza without having their jaw wired shut that’s a disgrace.”
