In an unusually outspoken interview on CNN, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) claimed that “anti-government ideologues” (we’re assuming she’s referring to the Tea Party) were actively pursuing a government shutdown through their latest attempt to defund the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare.
When host Candy Crowley pointed out that the aim of the Tea Party appeared to be the defunding of Obamacare, Pelosi responded accurately by claiming that this was merely the means, not the end.
“They want to shut down the government. The effect of putting the Affordable Care Act on the bill is shutting down government. They know that.”
Pelosi then threw down the legislative gauntlet, challenging the Republicans to focus on important issues, and to take on the anti-government fundamentalists in their ranks:
“They’re there to burn down what we should be building up in terms of investments in education and scientific research and all that it is that making our country great and competitive,” Pelosi said. “I don’t paint them all with the same brush, and I certainly don’t paint the Speaker with that brush.”
Senior Republicans have privately and publicly acknowledged that any attempt to defund Obamacare will fail. Despite this, Speaker Boehner and his top lieutenants apparently lack the strength and the will to stand up to the Tea Party’s increasingly menacing and bizarre demands.
