Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney sat down for their first joint interview on Thursday night since their campaign derailed in 2012, and man was it nauseating. And after the customary bashing of President Obama — I understand that it’s a Fox ritual — Megyn Kelly pointed a question at the two men: which one would be running for president in 2016?
Now, if the world was remotely just, the answer would be “neither” and such a question wouldn’t exist.
However, their answer, after awkward laughter, was “He will:”
RYAN: “I’ll give it to him.”
ROMNEY: “He’s very generous, but I had my turn. It’s his turn now.”
RYAN: “He should do it.”
Oh, but their mutual fawning didn’t end there. No, I brought up an unjust universe for a reason.
After the interview, the fawning continued in Chicago, where Ryan teased Romney, who has twice run for the White House, that “third time’s the charm.” Romney returned the compliment by telling Ryan that he “wouldn’t be a bad president” himself (bad compared to what? Genghis Khan?) Earlier in the week, Ryan joked that if Romney tried to run again, he would drive the bus if asked.
Ryan also heaps praise on Romney in his new book, The Way Forward, but his call for Republicans to reach out to new voters is actually an implicit critique of Romney’s Rich White Guy Express campaign in 2012.
R² capped off their reunion with an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Ryan dumped the water on Romney, who commented that “It is cold.” He then challenged his wife Ann and his former Saturday Night Live impersonator, John Sudeikis.
