You know why the good die young, and nasty, ignorant old bastards live forever? So they’re around for a while to remind us why we don’t want to be the society we were 50 years ago. Conservatives are by definition revenants of the past. That makes them, often as not, at least points of reference who tell us how far we’ve come, how much further we have to go, and exactly how the Hell hard we should be running to get there. And Pat Robertson, among all of them, is a sterling example of what happens when 50s bigots bring 80s nonsense into the 21st Century.
In this clip, Pat addresses a would-be missionary who has so much faith in God’s power to heal the people of Kenya, that she’s worried about “testing” his healing power by going to Kenya. Said “Anonymous“:
I am planning to go on a mission trip to Kenya in December. I believe that God Heals today and am not consumed about the chance of contracting Ebola. I am also a person who is willing to take practical precautions. However, some friends and family think that my decision to travel is foolish during this season, saying that I am testing God and asking if I have a death wish?
What do you think? I do not believe I am being foolish, and I want to honor those around me; but I want to follow God’s call on my life most of all. Do you think there are undue risks that we do not know about and the dangers are higher than perceived here in America?
“Not in Kenya. You might get AIDS in Kenya, the people have AIDS. You got to be careful, the towels can have AIDS.”
But, hey…don’t worry too much, Anonymous. First, because God’s miraculous powers always work except when you want them to. And also, because everyone knows AIDS is a punishment for homosexuality. If you catch it, it just means you were a closet queer and deserved it anyway. It all works out in the end.
But, please keep talking, Pat.
Every time you open your mouth, we get a little further from the 50s.
