Everyone remembers Terry Jones, the anti Muslim nut case who “pastors” at the Dove World Outreach Center, a tiny non-denominational “Christian” church in Gainesville, Florida. He won’t let us forget him. He is the guy who thinks that it is a good idea to burn the Qur’an to prove to the Muslim community that his God is stronger than their God, never realizing that it is the same God he is talking about in both cases. Looking a lot like Clay Morrow of the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ TV series and also, like Clay, armed at all times, Jones regularly spews ignorant and misinformed opinions about Islam and all Muslims.
When he first came up with his plan to burn the Qur’an in 2010, it sparked riots in Afghanistan and was condemned by David Petraeus, then military commander there, for putting our troops in danger. At the time, he was finally convinced not to do it and called off the scheduled burning to commemorate the ninth anniversary of 9/11. He had said at the time when asked WWJD, that he believed that Jesus would tell him to do exactly that.
Well, Terry’s back in the news again. This time, he was arrested along with associate “pastor” Wayne Sapp by the Polk County Sheriff’s Department while en route to a park where he had been denied a permit to hold his Qur’an burning event. Jones and Sapp were driving a truck towing a large barbeque grill which was loaded with 2,998 kerosine soaked copies of the Qur’an. Deputies charged the pair with unlawfully transporting hazardous materials. Jones also received a weapons charge, as he was openly carrying a sidearm in violation of the law. It appears that this may have been exactly what he was seeking since he had been warned not to attempt it and publicly stated that he intended to go through with the scheduled burning anyway. He does have a pattern of flouting the law.
People such as him are the best recruiting tool that al Qaeda has. How better to convince a young Muslim male that we are out to wipe them from the face of the Earth than to play him a video of Jones telling people that “Islam is of the Devil” a slogan that he has emblazoned on T-shirts that his followers not only wear, but they put them on their children and send them to school wearing them.
What we need in this country is more understanding, not less. Islam, Judaism and Christianity, the three largest religions in the world, all worship the God of Abraham. They only happen to have different rituals. There are many different denominations of Christians, and while there may be disagreement among them, they do not teach their congregants to hate those with different Christian traditions, nor do they teach them to hate Jews. Why then, is there so much hatred toward Islam? How can a man like Terry Jones inspire such hatred in his followers? It is time for a change, and the sooner the better. We will not stop terrorism with bombs and guns, the only way to stop it is to show them that it is only a few fringe elements such as Jones who hate them and want them dead and that in reality we are all pretty much the same with the same dreams, the same desires and hopes for the future.
