Fascism. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot, but few people know what the word actually means.
At it’s heart, fascism is a variant on collectivism. Rather than people acting in unity for something like, say, the community or one another, fascism is about people acting in unity for a State; the ultimate form of nationalism. Fascism requires nationalism; without nationalism, there is no fascism.
Fascism and communism are different in this regard: in communism, you have no state, no social classes, no money. Fascism requires all three.
So how does the pro-life movement factor into this? What makes the pro-life movement fascist?
“Pro-lifers” are unquestionably extreme collectivists. Taking a step back from TEH BAH-BEEEEZZZ argument allows us to look at a couple of central claims that the “pro-lifers” are making every time they open their mouth:
- A fetus/embryo/zygote is alive
- A fetus/embryo/zygote is human
The first point is pretty incontestable, as cells are alive, but let’s give them the second point and say the zygote is a unique human with human DNA. Now DNA doesn’t mean it’s a legal entity (otherwise human chimeras should be charged with murder), but it is a “unique” “human” entity — again, insomuch as you’re willing to consider a human chimera two or more independent entities.
Giving them point 2, let’s take a look at a different situation:
- A person (with unique DNA) is suffering from organ failure and they need organs to survive
- This is a stranger, you’ve never met them before, but they have the same blood type as you, and while they’re on the short-list for organ transplants, they’ve still got six to nine months before they can get replacement organs of their own
- You’re in a position to offer immediate relief by acting as an short-term dialysis machine, for those six to nine months.
Most people way say that you should have a choice to act as a short-term dialysis machine, and that if you refuse, and that person does die, then you’re not responsible for their death and that doctors aren’t responsible for their death, either.
Let’s toss in one more dimension: the State.
Does the State have the right to come in and tell you that you have to act as a dialysis machine, and if you refuse, you’ll be punished for murder? Put yourself in that situation: the police approach you, a total stranger, and tell you that you have to give up your organs for the next six months to support a person that you’ve never met who is waiting for an organ transplant, and if you don’t, you’ll be charged with murder and imprisoned.
Most people would say that’s insane. That’s the sort of thing out of a dark dystopian novel; it’s communism gone mad. It’s state-sponsored organ theft.
And yet, that’s exactly what the pro-lifers are suggesting. That the State can come in and tell you that you have to give up your organs for someone you’ve never met, for six to eleven months, otherwise you’re going to be charged with murder in the inevitable event that they die when you pull the life support on them. And since it only applies to women, it’s gender discriminatory, as well.
Now, the retort (aside from graphic pictures that mean nothing, since death is death regardless how it happens) is that the woman made her “choice” to get pregnant, and thus, she has a “responsibility.”
Responsibility does not negate rights. It’s my responsibility to be a law abiding citizen, but just because I’m arrested does not mean I lose my right to freedom of speech or religion. Just because a woman gets pregnant does not mean she loses her right to bodily autonomy and bodily integrity.
So “responsibility” doesn’t even matter. It’s a red herring.
I described it as “communism gone mad,” but that’s not the case. It’s collectivism gone mad, for sure, but this isn’t communism.
This is fascism; your bodily integrity and autonomy only extends as far as the State allows, and the State can force you to sacrifice it for other people, so long as it fits the state’s interests.
The “pro-lifers,” then, are not only fascists, but they also support state-sponsored organ theft (“organ redistribution,” if you will). Given this, is it any surprise that they find ranks with the rest of the racists, bigots, sexists, Neofeudalists, and totalitarian white-skinned theocrats in the Republican Party?
