Look, don’t get Oklahoma Republican state representative John Bennett wrong…he doesn’t have anything against Muslims. It’s just that they’re kind of like Nazis, is all. Would he eat dinner with a Muslim? Sure. Would he let a Muslim drive his taxi, so they could rollerblade through the park afterward? Totally. It’s just that Islam is pretty much the same as the Third Reich. Just sayin.
Now, in an election year, that might seem like a bit of an edgy sentiment; and it probably would be, if not for the fact that a disgruntled Muslim employee recently attacked and beheaded a former co-worker in Moore, Oklahoma recently. So, really, could just be that Bennett is acting as a literal representative of his home state.
So, how, exactly, does a post-Moore Oklahoman feel about Mooslems these days? Bennett spoke at a townhall meeting (read “patriot group,” read “aging white supremacists“) in Muskogee Thursday night.
“There is no radical Islam. There is no moderate Islam, because the teachings of Mohammed’s teaching only teaches one thing — and that’s the violence that we’re seeing in ISIS, and in the beheading in Moore and other places. That is Islam. Period.”
But Jena Kelley, seated in the audience and notably absent of white hair or liver spots, begged to differ:
“The sick freak, and I’ll call him that, who cut off the lady’s head is responsible for what he does. But I have sweet Muslim friends who don’t know him, don’t identify with his religious [views], and who appreciate having their government say they’re no better than ISIS and having their Oklahoma neighbors be made afraid of them.” She added “And they’re afraid to come tonight.”
“Well, you know what, your nice friends…why aren’t they out there condemning [this violence.]” Kelley interrupted with “They ARE,” but Bennett continued. “We condemn the killings of innocents. Islams, Muslims, doesn’t consider Non-Muslims innocent.”
He went on to say that Muslims should not be trusted, particularly if they remain silent.
“You think every German was a Nazi? No, they weren’t. But what happened with the Nazis was that once they got in power, all those Germans that sat quiet or were scared to say anything had no choice but to follow and support what they were doing. So is every Muslim bad? No. But if they subscribe to Islam and what it teaches, and if they’re not standing up and condemning what Islam teaches, then they’re just going right along with them, just like the Germans did when the Nazis were around.”
So, Muslims aren’t bad, as long as they’re condemning Islam. Makes sense.
Here are two other points to mull over:
- Does it make your religion superior to condemn the killing of innocents, but do it anyway? Because there are plenty of people on Death Row and among the civilian casualties of our “civilized” aerial bombardments who’d love to hear of the Christian value of condemning violence.
- True, Mohammed did encourage violence against innocents, and those outside of his own religion. But then again, according to the Bible, so did GOD HIMSELF. Repeatedly. Consistently. So, maybe Christians and Jews aren’t to be trusted either, until they’re willing to condemn their own god.
Maybe the problem isn’t The Messenger…maybe it’s the guy who wrote the message.
