Dwayne Dockens of Edmond, Oklahoma is proud of his Halloween decorations. His yard is adorned with numerous zombie babies, pumpkins, skeletons, ghosts, and tombstones — including one for President Obama. While some neighbors find the latter decoration tasteless and offensive, Dockens insists that not a single decoration is going away.
“We made them a few years ago back when it was a big deal, questions up about [Obama’s] birth certificate,” Dockens said. “And we made all these ourselves so just thought it was kind of humorous and, you know, went ahead and put him in there as well.”
Neighbor Jamilla Phillips was shocked when she saw the President’s name on one of the faux tombstones, and wonders about the message Dockens is sending to children.
“I was absolutely offended,” Phillips said. “He is the president of the United States and it actually is about respect. It’s a total respect thing because this person is still alive.”
Dockens claims that he has used the tombstone for three years with no complaints. “I certainly didn’t mean to offend anybody or cause any problems. Don’t know that I would take it down,” he said, noting that making the decorations — including the tasteless Obama one — brings his family closer together.
He says everyone “loves” the decoration.
