Oklahoma GOP State Representative Sally Kern is not shy about stating her opinion of homosexuality. She has often spoken out against equal rights for the LGBT community. She recently introduced three anti-gay bills in the legislature, although she has withdrawn one which would allow business owners to discriminate against gays and lesbians because she says it would not have accomplished what she intended.
The bill that was withdrawn, “The Business Protection Act” stated that:
“No business entity shall be required to provide any services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, goods or privileges related to any lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender person, group or association.”
One of the remaining bills, the “Freedom to Obtain Conversion Therapy Act” which would allow parents to force underage children to undergo “conversion therapy,” a thoroughly debunked practice which has been shown to be harmful, leading to depression, drug abuse and an increased incidence of suicide.
The other bill, the “Preservation and Sovereignty of Marriage Act” would forbid the use of government funds, including the salaries of government workers, for the licensing or support of gay marriage. In other words, a county or city clerk could not issue a marriage license to a gay or lesbian couple since that would be done while they are being paid by the taxpayer.
Kern has denied that she hates gays and lesbians saying:
“I don’t hate anybody. It means you look at an issue and decide what’s right. If they want to live that way, let them, but see, that’s not enough for them, right now. What they want is to force their lifestyle upon the rest of us.”
Nothing hateful there or in an earlier comment she made speaking to a group of like minded people:
“Every day our young people…they’re bombarded with ‘homosexuality is normal and natural.’ It’s something they have to deal with every day. Fortunately we don’t have to deal with a terrorist attack every day, and that’s what I mean. It’s more dangerous, and yes I think that it’s also more dangerous because it will tear down the moral fiber of this nation.”
Fortunately for the LGBT community in Oklahoma, Kern’s rhetoric of hatred and intolerance is almost universally rejected even by other conservatives in the legislature.
