Can a couple of “Christian Constitutionalists” get to decide who can buy and fire weapons at their gun shop and range? The answer depends on whom you ask.
For the manager of Save Yourself Survival and Tactical Gear in Oktaha, Oklahoma, declaring the business owned by his fiancee a “Muslim-free” zone is a matter of homeland security.
I didn’t want any terrorists, or Muslims, cult, whatever you want to call them, training on my gun range…. There is a military recruiting station in the mall in Muskogee, and I thought this was one thing I
could do to help protect our local soldiers.
For the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations [CAIR], the sign posted in the store’s window is in violation of the United States Constitution, which prohibits discrimination based on religion. He sees the store’s policy as “a return to segregationist practices of the past.”
For the manager, a veteran of the Iraq War, the policy has “nothing to do with segregation or race”:
I know the Quran says about lying to infidels and killing infidels. I don’t want them practicing those religious beliefs on my range.
But for the director, whose organization is dedicated to advocating “for justice and mutual understanding,” the policy is borne of “ignorance”:
[T]here are individuals in many faiths who commit terrorist acts.
At the moment, CAIR remains frustrated by the lack of action taken by the Department of Justice on what would appear to be an unvarnished instance of discrimination. Indeed, the kind of acts taken against Muslims now are not unlike those directed towards African Americans not so long ago. As the legal director of ACLU-Oklahoma explains:
If the ideas of public segregation and second-class citizenship belong anywhere, they belong in the past. Whether a business’s policy is ‘no coloreds’ or ‘no Muslims,’ it is making the same choice to put hate and
ignorance ahead of traditional American values like freedom and equality. It is important that we as citizens speak out against the growing movement to resurrect Jim Crow.
An overreaction, you think? Well, you should know that “Muslim-free zones” have been declared by businesses in five other states, including the true-blue state of New York.
So beware: Jim Crow may be coming (back) to a state near you…
