America’s disdain for the Tea Party has grown seemingly parallel with the Tea Party’s hatred of facts. Tea Party favorability had reached an all-time low at just 22% of Americans supporting the
bowel movement. This has not stopped this very vocal, very dangerous minority from doing as much damage to our country as possible. Tea Party politicians have worked tirelessly to obstruct any positive change, while their mouth breathing supporters mindlessly lauded the efforts.
For the most part, if America hates it, the Tea party loves it! This even holds true with Republicans: Take Tea Party hero Ted “Green Eggs and Bullshit” Cruz, for example. Over 70% of Tea Partiers favor him. Of the rest of the Republican party, only 25% like him. Over 40% of Republicans feel that raising the debt ceiling and maintaining America’s credibility is essential. The Tea Party? 23%.
This disconnect with reality extends to science, as well. While this is not surprising, with Tea Party politicians pushing Creationism in schools in spite of its lack of scientific validity, it is surprising just how many deny global warming.
A September PEW Research Center study found that Americans overwhelmingly accept that climate change is occurring. This study polled a total of 1,504 people, including 405 Republicans, 475 Democrats, and 550 Independents. Republicans and Republican-leaning independents were split into two groups: Tea Party and Non-Tea Party, based on their support of the movement. Polling was conducted via telephone interviews with the youngest adult living in the household.
67% of all adults believe global warming is definitely occurring, including 84% of Democrats and 61% of non-Tea Party Republicans. However, only 25% of Teabaggers accept this to be the truth, with a whopping 70% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who support the Tea Party saying that there is no solid evidence of global warming (as opposed to 30% of more reasonable Republicans.)
Republicans and Independents’ opinions seem to be less affected by education than those of Democrats. While over half of non-college graduates among Democrats see human activity as the main cause of global warming, that number jumps to a whopping 86% among Democratic college graduates. Republicans and Independents experience very little change, however. 23% of Republican non-graduates, for example, see human activity as the main cause; that number only jumps to 28% among graduates.
This study serves to reinforce what most already know: the Tea Party’s aversion to facts is frightening. Once again they have proven themselves to be willing to deny anything they don’t like to think about even in the face of what most would consider to be overwhelming evidence. Teabaggers, just like they demonstrated with the shutdown, are willing to let the world burn.
