Ray Albers, of the St. Ann Police Department and “Go f**k yourself” fame, has resigned from the force, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Albers pointed an assault rifle at protesters in Ferguson while cursing at them while also telling them to get back. The St. Ann board of aldermen gave Albers the choice of resigning, or getting fired. He worked for the department for 20 years.
Police chief Aaron Jiminez said, according to the Post-Dispatch, that deciding whether to fire Albers was difficult because he was a good officer and a friend. However, Jiminez said that, regardless of what happened in Ferguson, the whole situation was a black eye on the St. Ann police department.
When some Ferguson protesters confronted Albers, he leveled his rifle at them and said, “I will f***ing kill you. Get back,” and then, when someone asked his name, said, “Go f**k yourself.”
Jiminez believes that if this had happened at any other time, for any other reason, and not at Ferguson, Albers would more likely have gotten suspended without pay. However, Jiminez also said that Albers was justified in leveling his weapon at the crowd because they’d thrown water and urine at him, and at least one person also had a gun. Jiminez said, according to The Huffington Post:
“[Albers] saw three to four suspects with bandanas on, and saw one of them raise a gun towards him. That made him draw his weapon up to the crowd, and he was scanning and moving that weapon back and forth, trying to assess the scene. […] Him seeing the gun in the crowd, he had every right to protect himself in fear of danger until he assessed the scene.”
At least this police department did what it should have done in this case. Police officers are allowed to defend themselves, and there are times when they need to use deadly force. However, threatening people’s lives that way doesn’t just show bad judgment, it shows an officer thinking of those protesters as animals. It’s sadly similar to the way other officers treated the Ferguson protesters, too, and a sad testament to a growing problem with police officers’ mentalities these days.
