We hear stories all the time about people with guns shooting themselves. And we hear stories all the time about police with guns shooting other people.
But this is probably the first time in recent memory I’ve heard of a police officer shooting himself — and having it all caught on camera.
The man in question, a Kentucky Officer named Darryl Jouett, is currently recovering from injuries after accidentally shooting himself in the abdomen over the weekend, according to authorities.
Cincinnati police told WCPO that the Erlanger Officer was heading back to his car after dinner with his wife when he shot himself on Saturday. In a video released on Monday, Jouett is seen entering an elevator with a woman. In one hand, he’s holding a box, while with the other, he’s attempting to adjust his pistol. After fumbling with the pistol, he accidentally shot himself in the stomach.
The woman in the elevator covers her ears almost immediately as Jouett drops to the floor, his pistol following. One thing people who have never been around guns forgets is that guns are loud; despite sounding like a firecracker, a gun at close enough range is well capable of deafening someone.
After shaking off the shock, the woman quickly grabs her cell phone and calls for help.
The police describe the injuries as “non-life threatening.”
