The Koch brothers are not giving up their campaign of half-truths, deception and outright lies against Obamacare and it is beginning to look as if they will still be railing against it after everyone has learned the truth and embraced the law. Their latest effort through their SuperPAC Americans for Prosperity (AFP) comes in the form of an attack ad against Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) who is up for reelection this year.
The ad features Julie Boonstra, of Dexter, Michigan who is suffering from leukemia who makes the claim that after being diagnosed five years ago, “I found this wonderful doctor and a great health care plan.”
Alarm bells should be going off right there for any thinking person. After she was diagnosed with leukemia she found a “great health care plan?” Everyone knows that cannot be true, five years ago if she had attempted to purchase health insurance after being diagnosed with a serious illness she would have been considered by every insurance provider to be uninsurable.
She goes on to tell us that her “great health care plan” was cancelled due to Obamacare and that she now faces bankruptcy and death due to the extreme costs of her health care now.
What the ad fails to mention is that Julie never faced a lapse in coverage, she was able to purchase a new plan from Blue Cross Blue Shield which carries a premium of $571 a month as opposed to her old plan which cost her $1,100 a month.
When questioned about that both a spokesman for AFP, Levi Russell and Julie claimed that the problem was not with the lower premiums but with the higher out of pocket costs that come with her new insurance.
Another bold faced lie. Under the provisions of the law her out of pocket expenses for any given year cannot exceed $6,350 dollars which is just $2 more than her previous policy was costing.
When confronted with this fact Russell told Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post’s Fact Checker blog that he, “would assume there is an OOP max, but this is the story of Julie, a real person suffering from blood cancer, not some neat and tidy White House PowerPoint about how the ACA is helping everyone.” In other words, ‘an honest answer to that doesn’t support our narrative so I’m not going to give one.’
Julie is a bit more open about it than Russell, but still insisting that the law has harmed her. She told the Dexter Leader in an interview, “People are asking me for the numbers and I don’t know those answers — that’s the heartbreak of all of this. It’s the uncertainty of not having those numbers that I have an issue with, because I always knew what I was paying and now I don’t, and I haven’t gone through the tests or seen my specialist yet.”
As the campaign for this fall’s elections heats up across the country we can expect to see more of these deceptive ads produced by the Koch brothers’ propaganda machine and if they are coming right out of the gate with lies as blatant as this, one can only assume that by October they will be trying to tell us that the Earth is flat and that if we sail too far we will fall off the edge.
