We’ve all heard it: ‘A child needs a mother AND a father.’ However, a new study has found that children of same-sex parents do BETTER “than the general population on measures of general health and family cohesion.”
The study was conducted by the University of Melbourne in Australia. Researchers “surveyed 315 same-sex parents and 500 children.” Children of same-sex parents that were observed in the study scored roughly six percent higher than Australian kids as a whole.
Dr. Simon Crough, the lead researcher said that same-sex parents “take on roles that are suited to their skill sets rather than falling into those gender stereotypes,” leading to a “more harmonious family unit and therefore feeding on to better health and well-being.”
The stupid part of American society often cites a study conducted by sociologist Mark Regnerus, which did not actually study children of same sex couples. “Most of the subjects in the study grew up in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, long before marriage equality was available or adoption rights were codified in many states,” ThinkProgress reports. Regnerus focused on children raised in “failed heterosexual unions” where either parent had “a romantic relationship with someone of the same sex.”
The fact that Regnerus has admitted his “New Family Structures Study” does not actually address same-sex parenting is lost on right-wing equality detractors, who will desperately cling to any bit of pseudoscience they can in order to deprive others of enjoying the same rights and freedoms they enjoy. Why? Because Jesus. That’s why.
