Struggling families in North Carolina are just starting to find out about yet another thing their state’s GOP has done to screw them. ABC 11 reports that since 2002, parents have counted on an annual Tax Free Weekend to help them stretch their scarce dollars on back-to-school supplies.
Not any more, thanks to N.C.’s Republican-led state legislature. Back in January, they voted to hit the poor with crushing tax hikes while lowering the corporate tax rate by 17 percent, and pushing through a regressive flat tax of 5.8 percent that saves $10,000 a year for people making $1 million or more per year.
The GOP’s koch-sucking oligarchs claim they eliminated the Tax Free Weekend because it cost the state over $13 million in lost revenue each year. Gee, let’s see how much the state’s economy loses when folks either skimp on the school stuff or take road trips to neighboring Tennessee and South Carolina — which still have their tax-free shopping days in effect.
Retailers aren’t happy either. According to ABC, the tax free holiday is the biggest shopping weekend of the near next to Black Friday for some stores. Gee, maybe some of these retailers should consider paying their employees enough to be able to afford school supplies on their own, but raging about that would require a whole new post.
Sorry, silly Poor People. School supplies are for Rich @ssholes.
