The United Nations has produced a video to promote its Free and Equal campaign and it’s a delight. Like any Bollywood production, it’s colorful and has a catchy tune sung by a Bollywood star, in this case, Celina Jaitly.
The scene is set by a man on his phone, “Today Sir is coming with his special friend,” he tells the caller as the preparations for a wedding are going on around him. We meet family members from small children to the aging matriarch, as Celina sings, “Let’s laugh and make others laugh.”
Then Sir arrives with his special friend… a young man. The family stares, a few shrugging, and then parts to let the grandmother through. The young men hold hands as she looks at them disapprovingly. Everyone is waiting for Grandmother to say something. But, before she can, Celina sings:
“It’s a new look, it’s a new attitude. You might wonder where the old way of living is gone. But who is worried about who likes what, as long as in the world of love two people want to be with each other.”
Of course, everything works out. It is a Bollywood musical, after all.
But, in real life, everything doesn’t all work out. The UN produced the video in response to the Indian Supreme Court reinstating the criminal penalties for homosexuality when they overturned Section 377 of the penal code. This made gay sex punishable with up to 10 years in prison. The ruling was condemned by human rights groups and activists the world over, including the UN.
Fun, pro-LGBT Bollywood production seeks to change hearts and minds.
Even though “The Welcome” was uploaded to You Tube in April, it’s just now beginning to take off. The music is fun and the message is simple: “… everyone should be welcomed into their family’s hearts, regardless of their sexual orientation.”
Here is the video. Caution; you may tear up. I did.
