This Thursday on the Daily Show, host Jon Stewart slammed the 26 states that chose to forgo the federal money that would completely cover the cost of expanding Medicaid over the next three years.
All the 26 states unsurprisingly have either GOP governors or GOP-controlled legislatures, and are guilty of “total dickishness” as Stewart put it.
“[These 26 states] must be a pretty eclectic group with many different reasons to explain why they would turn down money to bring healthcare to the working poor. Or maybe there was just one — spite: the emotion that makes you turn down millions of dollars that would go toward healthcare for the working poor — because you hate the president.”
Stewart turned his sites toward Missouri State Senator John Lamping and played a clip showing him saying that Missouri couldn’t expand its Medicaid program because “we can barely afford to be in the Medicaid program as it exists today.”
“Boy, that is a tough choice,” Stewart said sarcastically. “Should we, as a state, accept 100 percent of this program’s expansion costs from the federal government for the first three years? Or, I don’t know…f*ck it.”
